Let’s Do the
“Stingray Shuffle”
As the Gulf waters warm up,
stingrays are coming closer to
shore for food, and as a result,
beach goers should be practicing
their “Stingray Shuffle.”
Why all the fancy maneuverings?
Because, once stung by a stingray, a victim will
feel an intense and debilitating pain which will continue for
hours if left untreated. Stingrays should be avoided because
of the poisonous bony spikes that are attached to their tails.
If the animal is stepped on, it can erect the spike to slash or
stab the offender.
To perform the annual beach “dance” and stingray
counter measure, drag or shuffle your feet as you enter the
water to disturb the sand. Any lurking stingrays will be
alerted to your presence and will probably get out of the
way.
Here’s what to do if you are stung: First clean
out the wound with fresh water and remove any foreign
material. Then disinfect the area with alcohol. If there is
a puncture or a piece of the stingray lodged in the wound,
medical attention is a must. To help ease the pain, immerse
the injured part in hot water for a few minutes. Let the part
cool and repeat. People respond differently to Stingray
injuries, so a doctor should be seen if problems persist.
